Useful Homeopathic remedies

The following remedies are those I’ve found useful in the first aid treatment of horses.

For serious conditions, veterinary advice should always be sought.

If your horse is being treated by a veterinarian and you wish to complement treatment with homeopathy, please inform your veterinarian of your intention. You will be surprised at the general acceptance of alternative therapies by mainstream practitioners.

  • General note
I tend to use remedies in high potency as I believe animals have a greater emotional response to ailments -- it's called 'survival'.

Aconite 1M (Aconitum napellus – Monks hood)

  • Aconite is great for shock, either from accident or emotional upset and can deal with past issues.
  • Anything that comes on suddenly benefits from Aconite.
  • If you can think of a pivotal instance that has led to a current situation, Aconite can help.
  • (I have used Aconite as a first treatment in laminitis that came on suddenly. )
  • It is often given as a ‘first remedy’ and then appropriate remedies can follow.
  • A dose may be given every 15 minutes for up to six doses.

Apis 200C (Apis mellifica – Honey bee poison)

  • Think bee sting, think swelling. Apis is great for bites and stings with swelling.
  • Any sudden swelling of tissue or joint benefits from Apis.
  • A dose may be given every hour for up to four doses and then, if necessary, three doses daily until improved.

Arnica 200C (Arnica montana – Leopard’s bane)

  • Arnica has, for centuries, been known as panacea lapsorum, “a cure for all ills”.
  • Given before and after any surgery, Arnica helps the healing process.
  • A dose may be given every 2 hours up to 6 times, and then 4 doses daily until better.
  • Occasionally an animal has been 'bruised by life' -- here I may use Arnica 1M.

Colocynth 200C (Cucumis colocynthis – Bitter cucumber)

  • I always think of the colicky pain one would get from eating really green apples.
  • Colocynth is very good for the ‘bending over double’ sort of pain from colic.
  • Horses look uncomfortable, often looking at their belly, sometimes kicking at their belly and seem extremely restless.
  • If acute colic is suspected, seek veterinary assistance. In the meantime, give a dose every 15 minutes until better. (Often the horse has recovered by the time the vet arrives!)

Carbo veg 200C (Carbo vegetabilis – Vegetable charcoal)

  • Carbo veg is one of my favourite remedies.
  • It has been called the ‘corpse reviver’ because it seems to ‘pick up’ patients that have seemed on the point of death.
  • For horses that seem ‘flat’, it seems to give them an extra ‘spark’. Here, one dose daily, until improvement seems to work well.
  • (A single dose works well on humans too!)
  • One of the other attributes of charcoal is its ability to remove ‘wind’, so it is useful in the treatment of ‘gassy colic’.
  • Colic is a serious condition in horses, and veterinary assistance should be sought.
  • Nevertheless, while you are waiting for the vet, Carbo veg given every 15 minutes can often resolve the problem.

Hypericum 200C (Hypericum perforatum – St. John’ s wort)

  • Hypericum is great for wounds, particularly when nerves are involved.
  • It is great for eye injuries and puncture wounds.
  • Dose may be given every 2 to 3 hours until pain lessens in acute cases, or for general wound treatment, dose twice per day.

Symphytum 200C (Symphytum officinale – Comfrey or Knitbone)

  • As its name suggests, Symphytum is excellent for fractures and for centuries it was applied as a puree around a fracture, much as we apply Plaster of Paris today.
  • Symphytum is used for fractures (even non-union fractures).
  • After veterinary assistance for fractures, dose 3 times daily for 14 days. (Healing is accelerated around fourfold.)

Silicea 30C (Silicea pure flint)

  • Silicea is often associated with animals that may have low stamina, but there are other uses for Silicea.
  • Removal of foreign bodies, such as grass seeds or wood splinters is helped by Silicea.
  • Dose 3 times daily for 10 days.
  • Silicea 200C also helps in the breakdown of fibrosed areas, either from wounds, or after a sprain if there has been leakage from the bursa. Dose here 3 times daily for 10 days and then continue once daily for another 10 days.

Calc fluor 200C (Fluoride of lime)

  • Calc fluor is a powerful tissue remedy for hard, bony lumps.
  • For exostoses (splints, arthritic changes), dose daily for 5 days, then once weekly.
  • I have found this remedy useful as a pre-curser treatment for arthritic joints, prior to using a joint food such as glucosamine and chondroitin.

Ruta grav 200C (Ruta graveolens – Rue-bitterwort)

  • Ruta grav acts on periosteum, cartilage and tendon.
  • Any tendon strain or ligament sprain benefits from Ruta grav.
  • Ruta works well after Arnica (for bruising, inflammation), as it helps healing proceed.
  • Dose once per day for 5 days, then once per week.

Thios 6X (Thiosinaminum – a chemical derived from Oil of Mustard Seed)

  • Thios is one of the ‘unproved’ remedies i.e. it has not been given to a healthy individual to ‘prove’ its effects.
  • Thios is unrivalled for its ability to dissolve scar tissue.
  • Dose once daily for 14 days, wait a week, then dose daily for a further 14 days if required.
  • Combined with appropriate massage techniques, scar tissue does not stand a chance!
  • The only caution here is that it does dissolve scar tissue and if the scar tissue is serving a structural purpose or is holding a pocket of infection isolated, then dissolving the scar may not be advantageous!

Thuja 30C (Thuja occidentalis – Arbor vitae)

  • Thuja is generally acknowledged as the remedy for warty growths and spongy tumours, but perhaps its greatest use now is to prevent ill effects from vaccination.
  • For warty growths, give one dose weekly.
  • To prevent ill effects from vaccination, give one dose of Thuja prior to vaccination.
  • Where there is an emotional component to the condition, I use 200C.

The remedies above are excellent first aid remedies.
For more complex cases, a consultation may be required to determine constitutional prescribing.
